| | | | | | | | I. | MOTION REQUESTED | | A) Approve Resolution in support of renaming I-75 between mile markers 130 and 133 to the Lieutenant Daniel Hinton Memorial Highway.
B) Support the erection of suitable markers reflecting the renaming by the Florida Department of Transportation. |

| | | | | | | | II. | ITEM SUMMARY | | The Florida Legislature passed HB 385 in the 2019 session related to honorary designations, which included officially renamed the segment of I-75 between mile markers 130 and 133 to the “Lieutenant Daniel Hinton Memorial Highway.” Passage of a resolution of support is required before erecting markers for honorary designations. |

| | | | | | | | | A) | Board Action and Other History | | | The Florida Legislature passed HB 385 in the 2019 session related to honorary designations of various transportation facilities around the state, which included Section 20(26) that officially renamed the segment of I-75 between mile markers 130 and 133 to the “Lieutenant Daniel Hinton Memorial Highway” and directed the Florida Department of Transportation to erect suitable markers. Section 334.071(3) of the Florida Statutes and the Florida Department of Transportation’s Traffic Engineering Manual require passage of a resolution of support from affected city or county commissions before erecting markers for honorary designations of transportation facilities.
Lieutenant Daniel Hinton was a member of the Florida Highway Patrol who served the citizens of Florida for 32 years at the Fort Myers Florida Highway Patrol Station. On February 19, 2019 Lieutenant Hinton suffered a fatal heart attack while participating in a defensive tactics training exercise.
Approval of this action will allow FDOT to officially rename the roadway and begin changing the signage to designate the corridor. |
